Historically, En Plein Air painting has occurred on Norfolk Island since 1788. With a literal meaning of ‘in the open air’, at that time the primary purpose of painting outdoors was to officially capture the island’s landscape, fauna and flora and record progress of the new settlement, including the major events that occurred.  There is a stunning body of En Plein Air work from our early years prompted by the wrecking of HMS Sirius in 1790 and subsequent stranding on Norfolk of Captain John Hunter, midshipman George Raper and Lieutenant William Bradley. Over the ensuing months all these men painted not only the wrecking event, but the settlement layout, flora and fauna.

Today, En Plein Air painting on Norfolk Island occurs mostly for the joy of it! With an incredible range of panoramas to choose from, there is literally no end of inspiration for the outdoor painter.  On our little 8km x 5km island, we have convenient access to almost every type of landscape you can think of! Here you will find dramatic land and seascapes, rugged clifftops, secluded bays and beaches, evocative convict ruins, lush rainforests and stunning flora.

With all that inspiration on hand, it’s no surprise that painters have continually been drawn to the island. The Norfolk Island Travel Centre has made it easy to combine a love of outdoor painting with a holiday offering twelve En Plein Air painting trips throughout the year. On each trip a highly experienced artist leads a maximum of 12 artists, providing tuition and guidance in an intimate and supportive environment.

On the trip to be held 13-20 November this year, the leader will be award winning Sydney-based artist and teacher, Elena Parashko. Elena's artwork is represented in private and corporate collections throughout Australia and internationally and in several galleries including Hamilton Island Art Gallery on the Great Barrier Reef. She says: “Inspired by nature, I like to draw attention to the beauty around us that often goes unnoticed in the busyness of our lives. Through my artwork, teaching and writing I aim to express a positive message. My challenge is to inspire others and share my passion for artistic creation”.  Elena doesn’t restrict her painting or tuition to one particular style or genre and enjoys experimenting with techniques, mediums and subject matter.

Many artists will be familiar with Elena’s writing about various subjects in art magazines such as 'Australian Artist' and 'Artist's Palette' magazines in Australia and 'Leisure Painter' in the UK. In addition she also writes regular inspirational articles for fine artists in the American magazine 'Professional Artist'. Along the same inspirational line, her first book is due for publication in October 2015 titled "A Survival Guide for Artists: How to Thrive in the Creative Arts". We are indeed lucky to have an artist, teacher and writer of the calibre of Elena to lead our November trip.

Packages for Elena’s trip, and all our En Plein Air trips, include a minimum of 5 art sessions, carefully selected tours and activities and some group meals.  Importantly however, personal time is also left for taking advantage of everything else Norfolk Island has to offer – swimming, snorkelling, a game of golf and absorbing our World Heritage listed history to name just a few.
