Umaga - who is in Sydney to meet with Sonny Bill Williams' agent Khoder Nasser about bringing the dual international to his Super Rugby Blues - was invited by coach Laurie Daley to watch the session on Sunday night and speak to the players.

State of Origin teams have traditionally been given one training session at the venue for their captain's run the day before the game; however, the Blues were granted special access to Sydney's ANZ Stadium for what was the first of two hit-outs before Wednesday's series opener.

The session was kept secret, the only hit-out of the NSW camp that wasn't open to the media. But a photo of Umaga posing with the players later popped up on Instagram.

In the past couple of years, the NSW Blues held their opposed session in Coffs Harbour on Sunday morning before flying back to Sydney in the afternoon; however, they changed their schedule this year when the opportunity arose to get an extra session under the lights at Homebush.

It was their first session with Josh Morris at centre after the Bulldogs star back flew in from Canberra earlier that morning to cover for the shock omission of Josh Dugan.

The players were given a day off on Monday to prepare for their final session at ANZ Stadium on Tuesday morning, which will be followed by Queensland's only training run at the venue later that afternoon.

Daley is conscious of how vital preparation is in determining a performance, but also knows there are things that can't be controlled given the captain's run before the 52-6 shellacking in game three was the best he had experienced since taking over as coach.

"I've been involved in preparations where you go in as confident as you can be, then you just walk away going 'wow, what happened?'," Daley said.

"Then there are other ones where you are really worried and nervous and you win. Everything you've been taught about preparation going towards performance goes out the window.

"[Last year] everything was crisp. No drop ball, good intensity. It's everything you want from a team. But we just left it all on the training field. I don't know, I can't tell any more."

The forecast is for rain at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday night, which Daley believes will suit his giant pack if it becomes a battle through the middle of the field.

"I think we'll probably tighten things up a little bit and play more through the middle," Daley said.

"That will probably suit us because we have a bigger team. But we're certainly not underestimating Queensland. They are a team that's mobile and fast, and mobile and fast people in wet conditions are hard to handle.

"It'll be the battle of the big versus the skilful players. I think it's supposed to be raining tomorrow [Tuesday] so on our captain's run we will get a session in with a bit of rain around."

The Blues have refrained from engaging in a war of words with the Maroons this time around.

The humiliating loss to decide the series at Suncorp Stadium last year has left NSW thinking they aren't entitled to talk the talk, reluctant to provide the Maroons with any additional ammunition.

"That's probably always been Queensland's approach," Daley said.

"It's probably always been our approach. Sometimes things are said in the media that get blown out of proportion, but again, we're not in a position to say anything.

"I think there's a number of reasons. You don't need to come out and say anything and two, we're not in a position to. Every individual is different I suppose but it's not the way I operate."

Ironically, the only game the Blues won last series was after skipper Paul Gallen launched a tirade against the Maroons on the eve of game two at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, describing the Queenslanders as arrogant.
