Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 - City of Nedlands

International Thank a Volunteer Day is being celebrated on December 5 – and the Nedlands Volunteer Resource Centre is saying thanks to those who willingly give their time.

Adriana Jaramillo moved from Colombia with her family in 2014 and felt volunteering would help her get to know her local community.

“I hadn't volunteered before joining the Nedlands Volunteer Resource Centre,” she said.

“But it was recommended as a good way to meet people and feel like I belonged to the community by doing something useful for others.

“My role as a Volunteer Referral Officer is a gratifying experience because there are many people who benefit from the efforts of volunteers and that makes me really happy.”

Adriana’s responsibilities include administrative computer-based work, providing volunteering information, conducting interviews with new volunteers and referring them to roles of interest, maintaining an online volunteering database, managing centre brochures and following up with volunteers interviewed in the past month.

“Volunteering is not just giving your time and effort to others,” she said. “It gives you the opportunity to feel the satisfaction of helping others.

“It pushes your boundaries and makes you understand we’re all different from each other – but we all need others, too.”

The Nedlands Volunteer Resource Centre, located upstairs in the Nedlands Library, is a one-stop shop for volunteering advice, information and different volunteer positions available.

There are also pop-up volunteering information sessions at The Grove Library every Monday from 12pm-3pm, Subiaco Library every Wednesday from 10.30am-1.30pm and Claremont Library and Community Hub every Friday from 10am-1pm.
