Dark tourism, globally, is worth billions of dollars, and South Australia has confirmed its taste for it with South Australian Tourism Award judges giving two awards and a Hall Of Fame entry to leading local operator, Adelaide Haunted Horizons.
Adelaide Haunted Horizons won Silver for Cultural Tourism, Gold for Best Tour and Transport Operator, and was inducted into the Tourism Hall Of Fame, at the 2017 South Australian Tourism Awards, held Friday, November 10, 2017.
Owner, Alison Oborn, says her decision to focus Adelaide Haunted Horizons on authentically telling the human story of South Australian history through the “ghosts” of yesteryear, has opened doors to historical venues and earned the trust of her guides and guests.
“I have always been intrigued by paranormal activity since growing up in a ‘haunted’ house but I have also been driven to find definitive, evidence-based explanations for mysterious phenomena,” says Alison.
“With this hunger for authenticity in our DNA, Adelaide Haunted Horizons’ tour guides never 'fake' any explanations or stoop to cheap tricks to tantalise guests with tacky stunts.
“We have found that by sharing well-researched stories of real murderers and figures from South Australia’s 'dark history', in the locations where mystery, murder, and intrigue took place, our guests are drawn into gripping and engaging experiences that they’ll remember all their lives.
“This genuine approach to our past has helped us earn and keep the trust of the custodians of significant locations like Old Tailem Town, the Old Adelaide Gaol, Z Ward and Glenside, Glenbarr Homestead in Strathalbyn, Adelaide Arcade, the National Railway Museum at Port Adelaide, and the Moonta branch of National Trust SA.
“By maintaining these relationships, we are helping locals learn more about our past and growing the number of tourist visitors who are hungry for tourism experiences with depth and intrigue.
“It’s been a blessing, having been able to turn a dream into such an awarded tourism operation, and these latest awards confirm that our plans for something BIG in 2018 have the industry and the public behind us,” Alison says.
Adelaide Haunted Horizons Ghost Tours
Adelaide Haunted Horizons began operations in 2010, with Alison Oborn using her research into “dark history” figures at the Old Adelaide Gaol and Old Tailem Town, to create an approach to tours that showed respect for the stories of the “ghosts” and respect for the intelligence of guests.
Adelaide Haunted Horizons has a well-respected team of guides, who are the foundation for the company’s success, currently Mike Oborn, Kag Allwood, Craig Cameron, Nadine Cameron, Peter Stringer, Michael Patrick David Metcalfe, and Tony Allwood.
Venue owners make the enterprise possible, and these include:
- Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village
- National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide
- National Trust of South Australia (Z Ward)
- National Trust SA - Moonta Branch
- Adelaide Arcade
- Glenbarr Homestead
- Adelaide Gaol
Adelaide Haunted Horizon also proudly supports the work of beyondblue for the work it does in the community to help build resilience and hope.
