Like most Australians, you give to charity but you sometimes worry whether your dollars are getting to the disadvantaged people you're trying to help. Charities at the same time worry how they can be efficient and accountable to their donors and funders, and that takes high-tech systems to achieve.
The DonorTec technology donations program helps solve that dilemma. DonorTec is a software and hardware donation program for charities and nonprofits, operated by nonprofit Community Information Strategies Australia (CISA). Since it started in January, the DonorTec program has saved Australian non-profit organisations over $15 million on the normal retail costs of software and internet gear.
The program is a channel for technology companies to donate goods and services to nonprofit organisations, with the double pay-off of freeing up hard-to- get funds for direct help to disadvantaged people. Key donors are Microsoft and Cisco, with others to join shortly. DonorTec is part of a global network of nonprofit partners of US nonprofit TechSoup, who have a vision for every nonprofit on the planet to have the technology resources they need to operate at their full potential.
Over 2500 organisations are now registered with DonorTec, ranging from rural financial counselling services that support drought-stricken farmers, to seniors
learning about computers, to Indigenous youth development, to employment services.
The DonorTec program distributes the latest products and there is a small administration fee to cover costs but this is a tiny fraction of the retail or even educational pricing for these products.
CISA CEO Doug Jacquier said that their Adelaide-based organisation has become a national voice for Australian nonprofits looking to increase their technology capacity.
"DonorTec is actively seeking new Australian company donor partners to be part of this major push for the charitable and nonprofit sector to develop its ICT capacity." Mr Jacquier said.
