Italy and its art are simply inseparable.

From Roman frescos and mosaics to The Renaissance, The Baroque and Rococo. Gregorian chants, Tarantella dances, Venetian glass.  Michelangelo, Puccini, Fellini.

That is why Carclew is proud and excited to be offering the one-off June S. Tanner Memorial Scholarship of $4,000 to help a South Australian artist undertake a professional development program of their choice in Italy.

While the artist can be engaged in any art form, he or she must have an existing body of work and be aged 26 or under.

“This is such an exciting opportunity,” said Tricia Walton, Carclew’s Chief Executive.

“Italy not only has a breathtaking artistic history, it continues as an artistic centre today across every field, both classical and contemporary, traditional forms and experimental.

“Italy breathes arts, so to study there, surrounded by cultural inspirations, would be an incredible, unrivalled experience that will expand your skill, knowledge and passion for what you do.”

The June S. Tanner Memorial Scholarship – which is offered in conjunction with the Independent Arts Foundation and the Italia-Australia Association – honours the memory of June Tanner. An arts-lover, June taught mosaic-making and accompanied groups of Australians on cultural tours of Italy. She was also a Vice-President of the SA Branch of the Italia-Australia Association.

“If you are a young artist and Italian culture and inspirations can help you develop, then I urge you to apply,” Tricia said.

To cope with the expected interest, an additional information session is being held at Carclew, 11 Jeffcott Street, Kaurna Country, North Adelaide.
