Millions of Australians will pledge to ‘get fit’ in 2015 as part of their New Year's Resolutions, but research tells us around a third of these people will stop before April due to injury, says Max Martin and Dr Nathan Harten, owners of iNform Health and Fitness Solutions at Norwood.

The Norwood-based exercise physiologists have just released an app developed in partnership with Dr Kevin Norton, that can screen would-be exercise participants for potential injury.

“Our Movement Screen app will finally make exercise safer and more effective,” says Max Martin.

The exercise physiologists have been researching and trialling approaches to injury prediction and prevention for 15 years and their new ‘practitioner only’ app will soon make that available to the fitness industry worldwide.

“Exercise physiologists and personal trainers are required to assess their clients' movement capacity and injury risk factors in an objective way under their Scope Of Practice but there has been no standardised or systematically used screening system for musculoskeletal injury risk until now,” says Mr Martin.

The App provides a ‘movement score’ and an associated ‘Injury Risk Score’ based on 9 common exercises/movements and other health information obtained from the client.

“Our App then takes a significant and very unique step further and recommends:

  • which joints are at greater risk of injury
  • the type of training that the client needs most to achieve better movement quality, such as more flexibility, or stability and strength
  • then recommends exercises that would be appropriate for the clients’ specific needs

“This is a great tool for the exercise professional, but also provides peace of mind to the new client that their training is based on evidence.

“We know that people starting an exercise program are at greater risk of getting injured, especially if they are deconditioned and unfit,” he says.

The Movement Screen is currently only available at iNform Health and Fitness Solutions in Norwood before its official launch in early 2015.

Members of the public can book in for a screening session during January and February and are welcome to take their screening report back to their own gyms or personal trainers.

iNform Health And Fitness Solutions

iNform Health and Fitness Solutions in Norwood, Adelaide, began with a re-imagining of what a health and fitness studio should look like; ours is spacious, uses natural light, boasts private showers and complimentary breakfast facilities so that clients feel relaxed and ‘at home’.

Our very ethos is based on "informing" ourselves of scientific research in our field and then breaking that down into meaningful, actionable insights for our clients.

Since iNform began in 2002, our vision has always been to play a vital role in lifting health standards communitywide, not just within our client base.

We believe the excellent, discussion-starting material being created by our team, coupled with our series of public seminars and, most recently, the development of Corrective Exercise Australia, has dramatically begun bringing this vision to reality.
