Australian kids have been fighting a losing battle against the fastest growing chronic disease among children – Type 1 Diabetes – which costs the country $1.6 billion per year and can result in blindness, kidney failure and heart disease.
The causes of type 1 diabetes are not fully understood but it's thought to be a result of a complicated combination of genetic factors and environmental triggers, and there currently is no cure.
As a result, over 20 leading food bloggers and chefs from Australia and New Zealand have united in a campaign to raise funds to help ‘Turn Type 1 into Type None’ with the release of the ‘Sugar Free Christmas Recipe eBook’.
All funds raised from the sale of the recipe ebook will support JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) in funding the most promising medical research into Type 1 Diabetes and its complications.
JDRF Australia COO Angela McKay said she was grateful to the foodie community for pitching in their support and believed the Sugar Free Christmas Recipe eBook was a way to help all Australians enjoy a healthy Christmas, and the funds raised will help JDRF turn Type 1 Diabetes into Type None.
“Each gift to JDRF helps to support medical research to deliver a better life for people with Type 1 Diabetes, and one day a cure. Type 1 Diabetes is not caused by a person’s diet and lifestyle choices, but a healthy diet can help everyone to reach a good balance, at Christmas time especially.
“JDRF is very grateful for the support of Natvia through the funds raised by the Sugar Free Christmas Recipe eBook," Ms McKay said.
With 30+ recipes to inspire your baking and cooking needs - anyone planning their Christmas menu can support JDRF by donating $5 for every recipe ebook downloaded via the sugar-free recipe site www.sweeterlifeclub.com
The ebook includes a range of desserts, main courses, salads and Christmas nibbles, all sweetened with natural, low-calorie, sugar alternatives.
Recipe Contributor from the Fit Foodie Blog Sally O’Neill said the festive ebook was packed with beautiful sugar-free recipes to enjoy over the silly season.
“It’s the small, sustainable changes to your diet that add up to big benefits,” she said.
Also contributing to the ebook, Classic Cupcake Company’s Anna Eden said they bake with their children in mind.
“It is important for families to take control over their diets and sugar intake,” she said.
“We all love a treat so why not indulge with a sugar-free cakePOP or cupcake and enjoy all the great flavours without the sugar!"
