We utilize hard wearing products eg: Tungsten Materials and Welded Hardfacing products that we fit to ground engaging tooling. One of the tools we manufacture and refurbish are used in the Agricultural Cropping industry called Direct Drill No-Till Seeding Tools. These tools open the ground and make a trench in the ground for the super fertilizer and seed to be dropped into place. These studies describe in detail that the positioning of the super and seed depth is very important to crop yields. The No-Till seeding tools used to open the ground at present utilize Tungsten carbide to slow the wear rate down to allow the tool to do its job. Tungsten Carbide has been the mainstay for these seeding tools for many years but with today’s broad acre crops Tungsten carbide is letting us down.
But now there is a new kid on the block and it is truly an amazing product its name is Titanium Carbide. Since 2010 we have been testing Titanium Carbide here in WA within the limestone industry and fitting the product to Limestone Quarrying blades. The test results are astonishing see attached power point presentation PDF. We have also completed some testing using No-Till seeding tools and the results are excellent. Tungsten carbide will still play a part within ground engaging systems but it has now lost its top dog status.
The problem we have had is the Titanium Carbide was only produced in round shapes 13,16 and 19mm buttons being a round button gives us difficulty in design and holding the button to the seeding tool as there is tremendous pressure on these tools. With technology moving very fast in this day and age we can now produce Titanium Carbide rectangular shapes. The same as Tungsten Carbide sizes used in No-Till seeding tools today an incredible leap forward and is now available.

Titanium Carbide: Is recyclable, less down time, continuous correct placement of fertilizer and the long-term economics are excellent in reducing the costs to the farmer see example below.
Example tool costing over five years based on one of our clients requirements to seed 30,000 acres
Approximate figures based on minimal cost increases over five years.
Now the client purchases 350 seeding tolls per year, over five years a total of $140,000 with some price increase calculated.
Initial up front approximate costing to refurbish 175 tools (our top protection) with 107mm Titanium Carbide $98,000 under five year contract.
A possible saving of around $8,400 per year.
We also have smaller size Titanium carbides 30, 38 and 47mm to fit all budgets.
Proposal is based on Smarttooling Int taking control of their seeding points for a five year period.
