The leading world expert on males as victims of abuse, Mike Lew, will present a workshop for male survivors of childhood trauma, including sexual abuse, in Adelaide today.

The workshop is being hosted by The Hon Ann Bressington at Parliament House, SA, on Wednesday 21st April, 2010, from 9am to 5pm.

The needs of male survivors of trauma and abuse are occasionally brought up in the media but at a political and bureaucratic level this topic remains a "no-go" zone. There is a resistance and apprehension to acknowledge the special needs of male victims and ensure adequate supports, services and resources are made available to address this pressing need within the wider community.

"We know that there are many male victims/survivors of abuse/sexual abuse in need of support and counselling but the system often leaves them to their own devices to fend for themselves," a spokesperson said. "Existing services fail to acknowledge the unique needs and circumstances of men because all too commonly services are tailored to meet the needs of women."

Mike Lew works out of Boston and has worked with male survivors of child abuse for several decades. He is the author of a number of internationally published books on the issue, including "Victims No Longer", a guide for men recovering from child sexual abuse; and "Leaping upon the Mountains", men proclaiming victory over child sexual abuse.

The Adelaide arm of Mike Lew's workshops has been made possible by support and sponsorship of: The Hon Peter Lewis; Richard Hillman Foundation Founding Member Gabriel Owen; UniSA’s Emeritus Professor Freda Briggs representing ASCA (Adelaide); and, of course, Mike Lew. All of these people are happy to be interviewed on this issue and ASCA (Adelaide) has a number of male survivors of abuse who may also be interviewed.
