Walker Corporation’s commitment to community engagement has been recognised by the Urban Development Institute of Australia with the company winning the Local Community Development category at the South Australian 2014 awards.

The UDIA awarded the top honour to Walker for its comprehensive “grass roots” approach to working with residents, community groups and the District Council of Mount Barker during the development of the Bluestone Mount Barker Masterplanned Community.

It’s the second time Walker has been recognised for its work in Mount Barker. In 2010, Bluestone was awarded Best Residential Development between 50 and 600 allotments.

The UDIA (SA) Awards for Excellence were presented before an audience of more than 300 industry participants. The award categories included affordable development, environmental excellence, urban renewal and residential development. Stephney Sproull, Bluestone’s Community Development Officer (CDO) over the past four years, accepted the award on behalf of Walker Corporation.

“This award recognises Walker’s approach to engaging with communities and is a welcome milestone in the life of Bluestone,” said Walker Corporation Development Manager, Chris Buttignol.

“Walker’s CDO at Bluestone Mt Barker has played a unique role.  The approach has been holistic and has developed over the last four years to provide a depth of support that seeks to ensure that new residents settle quickly and comfortably into their new home and community.”

The $150 million project - located on the southern fringe of Mount Barker over 98 hectares of land - was Walker Corporation’s first residential development in South Australia. The project was recently acquired by CIC Australia.

Walker is very active in South Australia, with the Vicinity industrial development in the Northern suburbs and the imminent $2 billion Riverlea Masterplanned Community. “Walker has a strong commitment to South Australia and the company is excited about these new projects,” Mr Buttignol said.
