At 1pm on Saturday a coalition of pro-Palestine organisations will hold a mass demonstration on the steps of the State Library of Victoria to protest Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip.

Speakers addressing the rally include:

  • Samah Sabawi, Melbourne-based Palestinian poet, playwright and political analyst.
  • Kevin Bracken, Victorian Branch Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia.
  • Kim Stern representing Jews Against Israeli Apartheid.
  • Mohammad Helmy, Chairman of the Egyptian Society of Australia.

“Israel is dropping bombs on homes, killing civilians, targeting public facilities and destroying civil infrastructure, including water and sewerage systems,” said Samah Sabawi. “It is incapable of negotiating with the Palestinians in good faith. We need a fair and just international intervention and a political solution grounded in international humanitarian law.”

“I am disgusted by what Israel is doing to the Palestinians,” said Kim Stern of Jews Against Israeli Apartheid. “In addressing the rally, I will be expressing my solidarity with the brave people of Gaza and belying Israel’s claim that it is acting on my behalf.”
