An Adelaide entrepreneur who solves the problems of the expense and complexity of marketing for small businesses has been named a finalist in start-up category of the 2014 Telstra South Australian Business Awards.

Julie Lawrie developed The Marketing Box to provide easily accessible marketing services, with defined outcomes and objectives, at a fixed priced.

Ms Lawrie, who previously worked for a national accounting and business advisory firm, says that the essence of The Marketing Box is to provide access to marketing advice without having to have permanent staff or traditional marketing consulting firms on retainer.

Ms Lawrie says her business model is unique, and she intends to keep small because the overhead pricing structure allows her to pass along the savings to the micro-size SME. Her growth strategy is to franchise the model.

“We provide marketing services at a level comparable to having in-house representation, but with a higher calibre of staff at a much lower price,” Ms Lawrie says.

“We provide even the smallest business with easy to follow marketing actions tied to achieving goals, with accountability and support. This includes mobile marketing services to suit busy SMEs.”

Julie Lawrie graduated from the University of South Australia with a degree in Business Management (Marketing major) and an Associated Diploma in Business (Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations) and has since worked in the IT, banking, travel nursing and start-up sectors.

She is also an ardent volunteer, a board member for a large NFP, currently mentors a director at a local NFP, on a leadership team for a NFP community café, and also mentors a child through the World Vision Kids Hope mentoring program. ##

While working for a national accounting and business advisory firm, Julie Lawrie saw many small business owners at the lower end of the market who needed marketing support but could not afford the price tag. To fill the market gap, she launched The Marketing Box in 2013 - offering fixed price and easily accessible marketing services. Providing a range of specialised marketing services, The Marketing Box offers strategic planning, branding, start-up and new product launch support, market research, corporate event management, website project management and copywriting. As a home-based business, Julie is able to keep overheads to a minimum and deliver her services at a competitive price and focus on micro and small businesses. Working from her north-eastern suburbs home enables her to engage more with her children while pursuing a rewarding career. Julie has developed a web based and mobile marketing app to further support small businesses.
