Market-leading taxi booking app, goCatch, is now providing Australian taxi passengers with cheaper travel by reducing to 5 per cent the customer credit card surcharge across the country.

Currently, some taxi operators charge passengers as much as 11 per cent on top of their fare if they pay for travel using a credit card.

Co-founder of goCatch, Andrew Campbell, said the surcharge reduction for electronic payments would provide greater certainty for passengers about how much their taxi travel would cost.

“It’s high time that there was a fairer surcharge for all non cash payments in taxis.

“We’ve now moved to a flat, 5 per cent surcharge nationally for all electronic payments,” Mr Campbell said.

“Most taxi travel is paid for via credit card. goCatch is leading the way by ensuring passengers pay only 5 per cent for electronic processing.

“This national initiative, available to customers from today, means that their next journey might be that little bit cheaper if they pay by credit card.

“Whether you’re in Darlinghurst or Dubbo, Brunswick or Broken Hill, if your driver is using goCatch, you’ll pay no more than a 5 per cent surcharge at your destination.

“Victoria has led the way by already introducing a flat 5 per cent surcharge (including GST). We’re now ensuring that the reforms are available to goCatch passengers nationwide,” he said.

Victorian Taxi Services Commission chairman Graeme Samuel welcomed goCatch’s decision to reduce its electronic payment surcharge nationally.

"For far too long passengers have been hit with exorbitant fees just for choosing a payment method other than cash,” Mr Samuel said.  

"In Victoria we recently halved the electronic payment surcharge to a maximum of 5 per cent, resulting in better value for passengers and increased competition among the industry.

"With this reduction now being rolled out nationally, passengers in other states will now be able to benefit from the taxi reforms that are changing the taxi and hire car industry in Victoria for the better."

Mr Campbell called on all other taxi operators to follow the goCatch lead and introduce the much-needed reform.

“The industry has had long enough to adjust to the idea of lower surcharges.”
