PLAYLOVERS Theatre in Floreat is going dark this month – and it’s not through a lack of lighting.

Staging the award-winning The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh, directed by Matt Longman, Playlovers is embracing what has been called “the darkest comedy of all time”.

“The play focuses on a writer who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders,” director Longman said.

The Pillowman is set in a police state and is an urgent work of theatre, which gives an unflinching examination of the nature and purpose of art and its potential effect on people.

“It’s a fascinating ride for the audience and it’s not surprising the playwright has been described as one of the theatrical luminaries of the 21st century.

“While still in his 20s, McDonagh filled houses in New York and London and was showered with the theatre-world’s most prestigious accolades, thanks to his cunningly crafted and outrageous tragi-comedies.”

The Pillowman received the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play, 2004-5 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best New Foreign Play and two Tony Awards for production.

Among the talented cast assembled for the Playlovers production are Michael Hodgen, Phil Barnett, David Bowyer, David Young, Marie Corrigan, Rodney Worth, Jessica Mews and Callum Fletcher.

The Pillowman examines weighty questions such as the nature versus nurture debate on becoming an artist, the power of the written word influencing a reader’s actions and motivations and what makes a so-called good story,” Longman said.

“It is an unsettling play and not for the faint-of-heart but it’s certainly a rewarding one that will leave you talking for long afterwards.”

The Pillowman plays at 8pm, March 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 and 7pm March 21. Tickets are $17, $15 concession – book on 0415 777 173 or through BOCS on 9484 1133.
