Tough decisions have been made by the Business Enterprise Centres Australia board to tackle funding uncertainties in an environment of nervousness in the private sector about Australia's economic position, says BEC Australia chair, Jack Hughes.

"As the shadow of the Federal Government's Commission of Audit hovers over  Commonwealth agencies, it has become clear that decisions affecting current  discretionary spending are being made before any official findings are released," notes Jack.

"Over the last four weeks this has resulted in substantial previously committed sponsorship dollars being stripped from the Homebiz Connect and Small Business Futures programs resulting in them being cancelled.

Unfortunately we seem to have been caught in the 'perfect storm' that has drastically reduced our income stream at a national level. Notwithstanding this substantial challenge the BEC Australia board is resolute in its will to continue operating and supporting the national BEC network and will continue to do so, albeit in a revised form” said Mr Hughes

"I want to also highlight, at a local level, the tens of thousands of small businesses in Australia that rely on their Business Enterprise Centres for advice and training will continue being supported.

"As Australia's peak body for small business advice, we are demonstrating the same discipline of cutting our coat to suit the cloth because it is the prudent, responsible thing to do to make sure we can maintain an ability to serve the most important sector in Australia's economy," said Jack.
