What could be more joyous than a substantial donation of over $110,000 to organizations that add to the life of our town? It’s a Christmas gift from the Aberdeen Park developers that’s been a long time coming.

Back in 2005, it was agreed that two residential blocks on the northern edge of the town, would be donated, with the proceeds from the sale used for the benefit of the Strathalbyn community. Since that time, adverse economic conditions have prevailed, and the blocks have remained unsold, until recently. And now, just in time for Christmas, the Aberdeen Park Community Trust is making a big difference to five local organizations, with a gift of over $110,000 from the sale of a block. With these funds, the organizations can more easily concentrate on their main purpose, rather than continually battling to stay afloat financially.

At a ceremony held at Stationmaster’s Gallery last Sunday, cheques were handed over to a number of those organizations by the Chairman of Aberdeen Park, Malcolm Montgomery who said: “The directors of Aberdeen Park are very pleased to support these community groups which play such an important role in the life of the town and district. They are all run by volunteers who do a great job and we are very glad to recognize their excellent work.”

Local resident Andrew Doube who was instrumental in negotiating the agreement to establish the Fund also spoke of his satisfaction in seeing the community groups benefit from the Fund.

Popular local identity and renowned artist David Dridan spoke on behalf of the town artistic community saying “If we thought of the ingredients of a giant Christmas cake and that cake was Strathablyn, today its community is being given the icing on the cake.”

Organizations that have received a welcome financial boost are:
The Stationmaster’s Gallery
The Strathalbyn and District Town Band
Alexandrina Singers Inc.
The Strathalbyn Woodshed
Strathalbyn Players Inc.

All of the above groups, involving people of all ages, contribute to the life and health of Strathalbyn. That mixing and co-operation of all the age groups from kids to grey-beards is beneficial to the people involved and is a big bonus for the town.
