FASHION comes to the fore in the latest free exhibition at The York Mill Boiler Room Gallery this November.

Running until December 1, Organic Synergy features a range of garments made by Wheatbelt resident Bev Vivian – responsible for Studio Bibi’s one-of-a-kind textile products.

The handmade garments and accessories reflect a certain earthiness and are characterised by the use of natural fibres such as wool, silk and cotton.

“I hope I bring a feminine, romantic and stylish quality to my work,” Vivian said. “My aim is for people wearing my garments to feel good, look stunning and know they are wearing something special.”

Leaving the city behind her, Vivian returned to her rural roots in the early 1990s, establishing an organic farm in Westdale with her husband Mel.

Together they set out on a journey towards achieving a shared vision of the good life, enjoying nature’s bountiful harvest through a simple yet sustainable lifestyle.

“I firmly believe in the adage the best things in life are free,” Vivian said. “Living in the country has enabled me to feel refreshed and invigorated every day.

“I have embraced living and the freedom of spirit and sense of place, which are qualities I distil into my work.

“People connect to the tactile properties of my creations – they love to reach out and feel the felted fabrics.

“There’s also a touch of the retro about my work, evoking memories of a time when life was less chaotic and complex.”

The York Mill Managing Director John Langton adds: “We’ve had a long association with Bev but the gallery has never been able to define exactly what it is about her works that make them so compelling to the eye and feel on the hand.

“Safe to say, the works are extremely popular and functional and remain a talking point for the many visitors to our gallery.

“It took a little coaching and encouraging to convince her to do this exhibition but the result is simply stunning and absolutely not to be missed.”

Organic Synergy runs until December 1 in the Boiler Room Gallery. Admission is free.

The artist will be in residence 11am to 1.30pm November 10, 17, 24 and December 1.

The York Mill is at 10 Henrietta Street, York, and the gallery is open 10am to 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday. For more details, call 9641 2900 or go to
