MEMORIES and dreams have been brought to life by artist Sue Duperouzel in the latest free exhibition at The York Mill Boiler Room Gallery.

Running from August 1 to September 1, The Colours of My Life is her collection of art works inspired by childhood recollections and the dreams that followed her mother’s death last year.

“Twelve months ago, The York Mill suggested I have an exhibition but at the time I didn’t have enough works,” Duperouzel said.

“The memories and dreams helped to give me a focus and they also had associated emotions, so I painted them – and other subjects I love – to make The Colours of My Life.”

Born in Guildford in 1944, Duperouzel trained to be a nurse at Princess Margaret Hospital and has maintained a passion for the arts all her life.

“In the late 1970s, I attended lessons in the medium of oils and since then I have also enjoyed working with watercolour, holding my first exhibition in 1987,” she said.

“I went on to work with acrylics and also found watercolour painted on calico, combined with embroidery, to be very successful.

“After living in Perth for some years, moving back to York has given me an endless supply of subjects and provided a great source of inspiration.”

Duperouzel has staged five exhibitions across all mediums, several with other artists.

The York Mill Managing Director John Langton added: “We have been pursuing Sue to hold an exhibition for a year now because we had all fallen in love with her piece detailing York’s McCartney Street, which hangs in our gallery.

“Her ability to capture the essence of our historic town in such a distinctive style made us all want to see more.”

The Colours of My Life runs from August 1 to September 1 in the Boiler Room Gallery. Admission is free.

The York Mill is at 10 Henrietta Street, York, and the gallery is open 10am to 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday. For more details, call (08) 9641 2900 or go to
