NSW's only community legal centre specialising in public interest environmental law, EDO NSW, has welcomed a significant increase in the annual financial support it receives from the Australian Government.

Federal Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC announced today that EDO NSW will receive an additional $300,000 a year in Commonwealth support, compared with around $100,000 a year previously.

EDO NSW Executive Director Jeff Smith said increased funding will help augment his centre's extensive rural and regional outreach program that provides high-quality planning and environmental law information and support across the state.

Mr. Smith said: “We are extremely grateful that the Attorney-General and the Australian Government have recognised the valuable work that EDO NSW does to protect the environment under law and ensure informed community participation in planning and environmental decision making processes.

“In the case of NSW, the additional funding will bolster our ability to provide independent legal advice and representation, policy advice, scientific expertise, and educational outreach on environmental matters across the length and breadth of our state.

“EDO NSW works hard to ensure we support communities outside of the metropolitan area, in rural and regional areas, up and down the coast, and across the ranges, including in the far-north of the state where we have maintained a regional office in Lismore since 2006.”

Key focus areas for EDO NSW's services under both NSW and Commonwealth laws include:

• Biodiversity protection
• NSW planning system reforms
• Private conservation
• Aboriginal cultural heritage
• Mining law
• Protection of agricultural lands
• Water rights
• Coastal development issues
• National parks and protected areas
• Climate change mitigation and adaptation

Mr. Smith said the increased Commonwealth funding and the four-year commitment announced by the Attorney-General would help to ensure EDO NSW's services are provided to the community through to its 30th anniversary in 2015 and beyond.
