The iconic Universal Wine Bar has been located in the heart of Adelaide’s Rundle Street since 1990, originally established by Michael Hill-Smith, Australia’s first Master of Wine. The Wine Bar has more recently been under the custodianship of owner and host Vito Romano.

Many of Adelaide’s social and business elite have held their functions at this location, either upstairs in the gorgeous dining space, or more publicly in the open bar area downstairs. It has always been a perfect setting for wine events with its massive wall of wine and perfect selections to muse over.

Our own wine group, now called Unearthing Wine, was originally launched as “Bring out your DeadReds” here. Vito approached Charlie one day and said "You should bring this concept here and we will host your event upstairs". So we did. We said at the time that the event would be "a relaxed gathering of wine lovers, talented experts and enthusiastic amateurs." And it was. As was the gathering securing our partnership with the Heart Foundation later in the piece, coining the phrase, "Drink Red with Heart and Celebrate Life".

In fact, Vito has always been a very generous man supporting others efforts with heart. He has lived and breathed the Universal Wine Bar for the past six years with the help of his family, great chefs and loyal staff.

Cathy Cavaleri of CC Creative Events, currently fund raising for White Ribbon and many more over the years, sings his praises frequently and mentioned her fund raising for Flinders Medical Centre Research for Cancer and the UniSA Dental Association events would not have been what they were without Universal's involvement.

Universal Wine Bar has also hosted and launched many a new season fashions, including the Camp Quality Fashion Fundraiser for Aimie Ellis and Tuscany Hyde Park’s gorgeous cocktail outfits to a packed room for Antoinette Hunter of Tuscany Social Fashion fame.

We know the famous Coopers defence against the takeover bid by Lion Nathan group was celebrated in style at this location by a very happy legal team from Piper Aldermans.

Charlie launched her book titled Unearthing to a packed crowd upstairs. And there have been many a birthday, wedding and opening night after parties celebrated over the years.

So it is with great sadness that we learn of its closure. From the end of August 2013 Vito must vacate the premises and close the doors. It is indeed a sad day for Adelaide and South Australia that our first, best and longest held iconic Wine Bar must close.

However, our Wine Group, Unearthing, refuses to let Vito close those doors for the last time without a big celebration, a final Wake in true Unearthing Style. We encourage all from far and wide to join us Friday 19th July from 6pm. Wear your finest wine celebration attire and let’s have this night sparkle.

We all need to make a contribution to changing our world. Our group have been unearthing old wine and unique wine experiences since 2007.
