English language experts at UTS:INSEARCH launch the most advanced academic English curriculum on the market. Eighteen months in the making, and built around the latest academic research in language learning, this $2.5 million curriculum will be delivered through blending state-of-the-art technology with traditional small group classroom teaching.

This latest curriculum will prepare students to use English academically, occupationally and socially by addressing the topics that interest young and ambitious students with a global mindset.

Director of Studies, English Programs at UTS:INSEARCH, and current President of University English Centres Australia (UECA) David Larbalestier, explained,  “The main difference is that this curriculum is topical and relevant, engaging students fully and stimulating their active involvement in their own learning, ultimately enabling them to make themselves understood in an academic environment but also in social situations as well.

”Our program is cutting-edge and is designed to meet students’ academic needs while addressing their current interests. Topics of study include everything from economics to fashion, blogging and social media to sport.”

Course content, devised and written by a team of 25 experienced, Ph.D or Masters-qualified and Cambridge University-accredited academics and teachers, offers clear audio recordings by professional actors, delivered in a range of accents including Australian, American, and British English accents.

The course is divided into 5 levels of English with each spanning 10 weeks (200 hours), by the end of which a student will have studied 1,000 hours of English - more language learning time than the average high school student receives in six years of study (estimated at 960 hours from year 7 to 12).

Two design teams worked in parallel on the project for over a year and a half. While one designed the textbook available in print and online, the other developed the interface of the digital site.

The new curriculum offers unprecedented flexibility in academic English language learning. UTS:INSEARCH English students will have access to teaching material anywhere, any time on any digital platform including laptops, tablets and smart phones.

Larbalestier explained, “A student could be in a café, or even lying on a beach writing an essay and submit an assignment there and then. When they get to the classroom, they will benefit from our trademark small group teaching from some of the most experienced teachers in the business.

“Our students will be university-ready, socially literate and career-prepared,” Larbalestier concluded.

Unlike competing offers, UTS:INSEARCH’s program is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It will prepare students for academic learning in a tertiary environment where English is the medium of instruction, teach them to write and interact socially using colloquial and less formal language, and equip them for real life in a global market.
