Perth retailers urged to pitch in for a much needed renovation rescue.
Mission Australia’s Youth Accommodation and Support Service (YASS) in Victoria Park will receive a much-needed makeover in May and Perth retailers are being asked to help out.
The project will start on Monday, 13 May, with professional interior designer Christie Blizzard volunteering her time for the second year in a row to create a fresh new look for two YASS accommodation units.
She will be supported by around 50 staff from Woodside Energy, who also dug deep over the Christmas period to raise money towards the renovation costs.
Mission Australia WA State Director Melissa Perry said the makeover of the two, two bedroom YASS accommodation units was much needed.
“The support from Woodside’s staff and volunteers has been amazing over the past three years and without them, these projects wouldn’t have taken place,” Melissa said.
“However, we’re also calling on Perth business owners to help us make this renovation the best it can be by donating televisions, furniture, electrical goods and anything else that helps make a house a home.”
YASS provides crisis accommodation for up to three months for young people aged between 15 and 18 who are homeless or are at risk of being homeless. It also provides a home for up to one year for 16 to 25 year-olds who are ready to take the step into independent living.
In addition, YASS provides young people with access to counselling, education and support services, with a view to helping them escape the cycle of homelessness permanently.
“With professional help from Christie and the volunteers, our mission is to transform these units over the course of a week into modern havens for young people who are experiencing really challenging circumstances,” Melissa said.
Last year, Woodside Energy volunteers joined Christie Blizzard to refurbish the Drug and Alcohol Youth Service (DAYS) in Carlisle.
