As the holiday celebrations come to a close, thousands of Australian men will suffer the most excruciating pain known to man – indeed pain worse than childbirth according to male folk law.

Gout, once thought of as a “rich man’s” disease affecting old men who consumed too much pheasant and red wine, is now on the rise with more than 70,000 Australians now suffering the condition.

NeoClinical is involved in a new gout clinical study for people suffering with gout. Please visit to find out more.

Even more concerning for the medical community, is that men as young as 20 years old are being diagnosed. Post-menopausal women also have an increased risk.

Gout is a form of arthritis where uric acid crystals form and lodge in the joints – typically in the feet - causing them to become red, swollen and painful to the touch.

The condition is particularly debilitating requiring bed rest, time off work and can cut short holidays and recreation.

Researchers are now looking at ways to prevent or manage gout “flares” which can last days to weeks.

Typically “flares” occur after a big night out consuming alcohol. A major factor in gout flares is also high fructose syrup a manufactured sweetener that appears in most sodas and many fast food products.

Dr Graeme Jones, Professor of Rheumatology and Epidemiology at the University of Tasmania, who is involved in the new national clinical Study says that diet and lifestyle can play a big role in managing gout episodes, particularly if someone is predisposed to the condition.

Professor Jones was featured in a recent article on gout in Body+Soul.
