Australia’s Bruce Garland and Harry Suzuki and their Isuzu D-MAX ute have moved further up the field on the third full day of competition in the 2010 Dakar Rally and are now knocking on the door of the top 20.

The Garland MotorSports pair finished the stage in 19th place*, while their Swedish teammates Pelle Wallentheim and Olle Ohlsson finished 24th*, both driving Isuzu utes built in Garland MotorSports’ Sydney workshop. The results put them in 21st* and 25th* outright, respectively (*correct at time of writing).

In 2009, Garland and Suzuki finished 11th outright and were first ‘amateur’ (non-factory team) home. They also claimed bragging rights as first diesel ute and first production chassis car. Wallentheim and Ohlsson (Tubus Racing) finished 44th outright.

The third stage from La Rioja to Fiambalá (Argentina) involved the special (competitive) stage of 182km and 259km of liaison (transport) for a total of 441km, and included the first dune crossings and off-road sections of the event.

It was not an easy stage, despite the short distance. There were sandy sections between the 21km and 117km points and a 30km section of towering white sand dunes. The entire stage was run at over 1400m above sea level and was even described as ‘complicated’ by the driver leading the field.

And at the end of the stage, the event had its third leader in three days: nine-time winner, Stéphane Peterhansel (BMW) took his 52nd Dakar Rally stage win in all categories and his 19th in a car, catapulting him into the lead, 4m33s ahead of Carlos Sainz (VW) with Nasser Al-Attiyah (VW) in third.

Of last year’s podium place-getters, defending champion Giniel de Villiers (VW) had a horror day with mechanical problems and had to wait for his service crew to help. He’s now 23rd outright compared to Mark Miller (VW) who is in fourth with Robby Gordon (Hummer) in ninth.
