Western Australia’s love of the iconic XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup has been captured on film and screened for the first time tonight with the release of the new documentary ‘Kalgoorlie Race Round -Our People, Our Stories’.
The documentary, shown at the Western Mining Conference Centre, captured not only the exciting racing action and fashion on the track, but the significant social and economic impact the racing industry has on the local Kalgoorlie community.
The documentary can be viewed on the Racing and Wagering WA website from Friday, 16 November.
Chairman of Kalgoorlie’s Discover The Round Committee the Hon John Bowler MP welcomed the documentary saying, “The footage to be launched here tonight really showcases the town of Kalgoorlie and demonstrates the fantastic experience visitors can expect when they visit Kalgoorlie in September for the Round.”
New figures demonstrating the economic and social importance of the racing industry in Kalgoorlie were also launched to coincide with the documentary.
Chairman of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club Stephen Young said the Goldfields-Esperance Economic Snapshot revealed that last year some 62,000 people attended one of the 56 race meetings in the region alone, spending $2.9 million, excluding wagering, as a result.
“The report states that over 1,434 people participate in the Goldfields-Esperance racing industry either as an employee, volunteer or participant such as a breeder or trainer, and this equates to one in every 33 adults in the region having an involvement in racing,” he said.
“There are eight racing clubs in our region which employ the equivalent of 232 people full-time and there are over 1,000 participants involved in breeding and owning thoroughbred race horses.”
These numbers are in addition to the scores of people from local businesses who say the week-long Kalgoorlie Race Round is the busiest time of the year for their business.
Local Kalgoorlie retailers like Chrissy Lloyd from Echo Fashions, Annmarie Patreece from Hair & Beauty Spa Ahead of Time, and Amanda Brown from Indulge Cosmetics & Fragrance all agree that the Kalgoorlie Round is a bubble of opportunity for the town and their business.
“The economic impact to our region is highlighted in the data released today where in the Goldfields- Esperance region for every $1.00 spent at the racecourse another $2.80 is spent in the local community on things like clothing, transportation, food and drinks to take to the races.” Mr Young said.
“Racing in the Goldfields-Esperance is more than just a sport; it’s an industry and the documentary and economic data announced today prove it really is the people and community who make racing come alive for friends and visitors to the region,” Mr Young and the Hon John Bowler agreed.
