Leading Queensland law firm Trilby Misso is enabling its staff to perform community service including work overseas by supporting them with a volunteer leave initiative.

Brisbane paralegal Thomas Zilm is the latest beneficiary of the scheme and has spent four weeks working in South African townships.

Mr Zilm worked in two fishing villages near Cape Town as a sports coach through the organisation 'I-to-I Volunteering'.

"Africa has always intrigued me and the idea of giving back to the world and helping people while completely immersing myself in the unknown really appealed to me," he said.

"Knowing that Trilby Misso would support me through its volunteer leave program, I did some research, booked the program and was on the plane before I knew it."

Mr Zilm was based in the fishing villages of Vishoek and Simonstad, working as a sports coach at a local school.

"This was a school of 1500 children ranging from three to 19 years of age and the purpose of my involvement at the school was to not only teach children the value of a healthy lifestyle through engaging in physical activity, but give them exposure to my culture and way of life.

"Most of the children hadn't really spoken to a Westerner before so it was about giving them the opportunity to ask questions and learn about life outside of their townships.

"I was truly privileged to be able to interact with the most incredible, loving and joyous young people I have ever met on day to day basis and I was honestly blown away by their attitude of humanity, community and respect.

"These children came from literally nothing, with many even needing to be bought food for the day, but you could not tell from their big smiles. I have never felt so welcome, appreciated and loved."

Trilby Misso staff are provided with two days paid leave a year to participate in volunteer programs.
