L’il Aussie Prems Foundation is the world’s first premature baby support group to incorporate live video access to babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) and Special Care Nurseries to its suite of online support services for parents and families.

L’il Aussie Prems Foundation has partnered with the Australian-developed [email protected] solution which offers parents a private and secure live video “virtual baby visit” on site at hospitals and online via computers, mobile smart phones and iPads.

The solution allows parents to continue bonding with their baby in special care when they cannot be in hospital and provides a means for other family members not permitted in the nursery to meet the new baby.

L’il Aussie Prems Foundation President, Julia Toivonen, said “Australia leads the world with online innovation in the support of families with premature babies.”

“One of the most difficult things for parents to deal with in this situation is the separation from their new baby. It is not possible for parents to be present physically in the hospital nursery with their baby 24/7. Some premature babies require many weeks of special care and life must go on with other demands at home and work, plus the needs of other siblings have to be met.”

“We will introduce parents to [email protected] via our online support website. A dedicated forum discussion has been set-up to answer any queries that families may have on how to benefit most from the solution in their individual circumstances. Early response to the initiative from parents has revealed a number of areas of benefit.”

“The live video visit is delivered in accordance with individual hospital protocols that can vary depending on the circumstances. It will offer peace of mind, reduce stress and anxiety and enable siblings and the wider family to bond with the baby like never before possible. [email protected] is a natural complement to our online forum and other services offering real-time support for Australian
families”, she said.

[email protected] is available nationally in 13 maternity hospitals and is being exported to hospitals in South East Asia.

The L’il Aussie Prems Foundation is a member group of the National Premmie Foundation and consists of five like-minded organisations which work together closely in providing support to families with babies in special care. The other members of the National Premmie Foundation will soon be reviewing how to best assist families with this latest Australian technology.
