ONCE upon a time Perth playwright Johnny Grim had an idea – to stage a madcap fairytale that adults would enjoy.

Presented by his company A lad in sane productions (note to subs: lower case is correct) at the Midland Junction Arts Centre this October, Fairytale of Sorts is partly inspired by the films A Knight’s Tale and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

“Besides a love of writing comedy material, I was also inspired by watching the hilarious television show Horrible Histories with my son,” Grim said.

“In a time long ago, in days before TV, Facebook, and X-Box 360s, villagers gathered in the town square to listen to the fanciful tales of the storytellers.

Fairytale of Sorts harks back to those medieval times, as we join the good folk of Partridgedale and meet with a host of lovable misfit characters.”

Grim, who is also directing and acting in the play, said audiences should expect nothing but pure fun.

“It may differ from many plays in that there’s no ‘take-home’ message,” he said. “It’s a play for those who adhere to the old saying laughter is the best medicine.”

Fairytale of Sorts marks the 12th production for A lad in sane productions, after Grim originally established the company in 2006.

Performing at a variety of venues, including the Old Mill, Phoenix and Camelot Theatres and Midland Junction and Don Russell Performing Arts Centres, Grim was named best new writer at the 2009 and 2010 Dramafests, the annual state drama festival.

He also has several plays listed with South Australia’s Moore Books and Lazy Bee Scripts in England.

“The main challenge with Fairytale of Sorts has been sourcing the usual suspects – actors, a stage manager and technical people for light and sound,” Grim said.

Fairytale of Sorts plays at 8pm October 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 and 5pm October 21 and 28. All tickets are $15 – book on 0430 889 789 or email [email protected]

The Midland Junction Arts Centre is at 276 Great Eastern Highway, Midland, near the corner of Cale Street.

A lad in sane productions

John Grimshaw tells a familiar story for playwrights, in that he found the lack of interest in considering his plays a somewhat frustrating experience.

Undeterred, in early 2006, he decided to take matters into his own hands, and formed, A lad in sane productions. The company’s first outing was with Grimshaw’s play The Karaoke Twist (The Old Mill Theatre, December 2006).

The play was well-received by audiences, and the lone critic who attended. Since then, A lad in sane has become a regular on the local scene, staging two to three original comedy productions per year. Directors looking for original, witty, satirical comedies could do worse than give Grimshaw's material a look.
