BAYSWATER will come alive with the sound of Christmas cheer at 7.30pm, December 18, as the community comes together to enjoy the annual Carols by Candlelight.

Located in the wonderful surrounds of the Civic Centre Gardens, this uplifting free event for families will see the Salvation Army Band and Colla Voce Choir pay tribute to what Christmas is all about.

“The City of Bayswater’s Carols by Candlelight service celebrates the traditional Christmas story but it’s also about bringing us together to celebrate and enjoy some universal community spirit,” Bayswater Mayor Terry Kenyon said.

“We’re delighted to be hosting this wonderful family occasion during this festive time because it really evokes the goodwill of the season.

“It’s a time of year that seems to bring out the best in people and, during this period, it’s an ideal opportunity to catch up with family, re-acquaint yourself with old friends and try to help those less fortunate than yourself.”

The Carols by Candlelight event features children’s entertainment such as face-painting, ballooning, a visit from Father Christmas, food and drinks and prizes for the best Christmas-themed costume.

“Proceeds from candles and programs purchased will go to Anglicare WA, helping those in need at this time of year,” Mayor Kenyon said.

“The annual Carols by Candlelight has been embraced by the community as a safe and relaxing event for the whole family, reflected in the number of people that now come along every year.

“Our local churches have been paramount in making this event a success each year by fostering a vibrant kinship among us.

“The tranquil setting of the Civic Centre Gardens is the perfect place for such a joyous celebration and I look forward to seeing a wide cross-section of community there.

“I’m also pleased that Father Christmas is able to make a special visit from the North Pole to hand out some treats to all the boys and girls who have been good this year.”

The Civic Centre Gardens are at 61 Broun Avenue, Morley, near the council administration building.

Originall, the Bayswater Road District was created in 1897 and, in 1961, it became a shire before attaining City status in 1983. The City of Bayswater is divided into four wards and represented by 11 councillors with the Mayor elected from among the councillors.

Recent developments in the City of Bayswater include the opening of the Galleria shopping centre in 1994, on the site of the old Boans building that burnt down in 1986. Morley is now the largest commercial district outside of Perth and Fremantle and further growth is expected.
