Sydney – 9 December 2009 – Getty Images New Zealand is proud to announce one of its leading sports photographers, Phil Walter, has been awarded three awards at the 30th annual SPARC Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards (The SPARCs).

Awarded SPARC Sports Photography Portfolio of the year for his collection of sports imagery, SPARC Best Single Photo of the year for his image of Prada bowman Bernard Labro getting swamped by a wave in the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series race, Phil also won a third award that he shares with TVNZ’s Michael Holland for the acclaimed SPARC Sports Journalist of the Year.

The highly regarded awards celebrate the best sports journalism in New Zealand annually, awarding journalists, broadcasters and photographers for their contribution to national sport. This year marks the fifth time in the awards’ 30 year history that a photographer has won the highly praised SPARC Sports Journalist of the Year award.

Phil Walter, chief photographer, Getty Images, New Zealand, was incredibly satisfied with his win, “I’ve been working towards achieving awards of this stature my entire career and feel incredibly honoured at being rewarded for something I love doing – capturing sport’s national and regional voice. It’s particularly satisfying that even though my job takes me around the world, all five of these winning images were shot in New Zealand.”

Stuart Hannagan, Vice President, Getty Images Australasia said: “We are very proud of the success of our sports photographers in New Zealand and the outstanding images they capture that are distributed all over the world. The SPARC Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards
is one of the most prestigious awards within New Zealand’s media industry and we think it’s incredibly well deserved that that Phil Walter, one of our leading sports photographers, has been awarded this commended title.

“2010 is set to be a big global sporting year for Getty Images with the Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Soccer World Cup all taking place and we are looking forward to seeing the iconic images Phil will capture during this exciting and important year of sporting achievements.”

The awards ceremony was held in Auckland on Friday 4 December and attracted over 250 local media and sporting celebrities. The photographers’ portfolios were judged by internationally acclaimed photographers and photo editors including former Associated Press and Reuters Sydney Photo Desk editor, Mark Baker, and internationally renowned photographers Bruce Jarvis and Chris Miller.
