Sure Optical has joined with ReviveR Cocktail Bar in Gosford on the NSW Central Coast to hold “Highballs for Eyeballs”, a fundraising event to celebrate the World Sight Day Challenge, and raise awareness about avoidable blindness.

World Sight Day is an initiative of VISION 2020: The Right to Sight and is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO); the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and non government organizations with the shared goal of eliminating avoidable blindness by the year 2020, in order to give all people in the world the right to sight.

The theme of this year’s World Sight Day is “prevention”. It is truly a shame when a person loses their sight because of a preventable cause. It could be as simple as having an eye test, yet there are places in the world where an eye test is not reachable, nor affordable. In many instances, the availability of glasses changes lives.

Locally, it is estimated that in Australia, 75% of blindness and vision loss is preventable or treatable. We must not turn our back on the 500,000+ Australians over age 40 who are living with some form of vision loss, or the 66,000+ who are blind. Funds raised on World Sight Day will be directed to 35 projects in 23 countries around the world. Optometry Giving Sight guarantees that 85% of all funds raised by optometrists and their patients will go directly to support programs that give sight to those most in need.

Sure Optical is committed to vision protection utilising the latest technologies for early detection of eye disease. Owner, Amanda Rungis is the driving force behind “Highballs for Eyeballs” dedicating her efforts to the memory of her grandfather who lost his sight in 2003.

“Sure Optical has been supporting World Sight Day ever since we opened in 2005” explains Amanda. “This year I wanted to do something different to promote World Sight day within our local community.” There is no greater venue for such an event than ReviveR Cocktail Bar, where owner Gordon Ryan has created a warm and friendly ambiance where people can get together and relax, talk, share stories and get to know each other.

Besides being an event to raise awareness of avoidable vision loss, it will also be fun. Everybody is invited to come down and enjoy a Highball. There awaits a big surprise for all when Mixmaster Gordon reveals his special cocktail created specially for this event. There will be door prizes and everybody will be entered into the drawing for the Grand Door Prize.

Examples of how donations can help:

$50 can help provide a study kit to an optometry student,
$100 can help provide 20 people with access to an eye exam and glasses,
$300 can help to provide a child size trial frame,
$1200 could pay a month's salary for an optometrist to see up to 40 patients a day.

Everybody should mark their calendar for Thursday, October 11, when we will all come together at ReviveR and show we care. Let’s make this a night to remember. Join us at ReviveR, 37a Mann St., Gosford, NSW.

Places are limited so don’t leave it to the last minute. Reserve your place by calling the friendly Sure Optical girls on (02) 4329 7000 to avoid disappointment
