Conducting a thorough system audit is a costly, time consuming and complex task. The larger the organisation, the more systems are run, making this a challenging task. Therefore, many organisations tend to put-off this daunting project and do not conduct a thorough IT system audit as often as they should. However, the longer they put this project on the backburner, the more complex the project will be to complete and the more difficult it becomes to rectify any issues.

To highlight the importance of conducting a regular IT system audit, a government organisation is currently in the process of running a system audit that has thus far taken months to complete. So far, they have found that one in six systems were either out-dated, will no longer be supported by vendors in the near future or required a substantial investment in upgrading. For example, current statistics show that 22 per cent of all PC’s in Australia are still running Windows XP, which will cease to be supported from April 2014. If an out-dated system is critical to business operations but is no longer supported by vendors, then an organisation risks having no resolution should the system fall over. Therefore, it is crucial for any organisation to be proactive in identifying these systems early and plan for ways to resolve such problems. That being said, how often should thorough IT system audits take place?

“If your business has a heavy reliance on IT systems, which most businesses do, then a regular system audit is imperative,” commented Kareem Tawansi, CEO of software development provider, Solentive Software.

“Most implemented software projects should breakeven within two years. Beyond that, businesses should expect to get another 3-5 years’ worth of value from it. That being the case, it would be important to conduct regular system audits with at least one major system audit occurring every two years,” advised Kareem.
