South Australian telecommunications start-up Red Button Technologies has attracted investment from Victorian based Optimation Software Engineering to develop and commercialise its  cross-platform, multi-mode telecommunications platform.

Red Button is a COMET Grant recipient founded by former National Broadband Network committee member Professor Reg Coutts and IT marketing specialist Justin Wearne, who is the new company’s CEO.

Optimation will take an equity position in Red Button through a convertible note mechanism, as the company’s technology partner.

Red Button Technologies CEO Justin Wearne said that the deal sees Optimation developing, implementing, and providing the ongoing provisioning for Connectivity Server.

Connectivity Server provides a platform for rapid development, prototyping and production hosting for cross platform multi-mode telecommunications based products and services.

“It’s very satisfying to attract this significant investment from a successful software development company as it validates our technology,” Mr Wearne said.

Red Button Director, telecommunications industry veteran Professor Reg Coutts, said that Connectivity Server addresses the time to market issue faced by large telecommunications companies.

“Telcos take between 18 months and three years to develop new products and take them to market,” Professor Coutts said.  “Even simple changes to their products or billing systems are a major undertaking. Connectivity Server doesn’t require PBX equipment, an application to be loaded on the user’s handset, or special arrangements with carriers."

Ron Miller, Managing Director of Optimation, said his company was investing in Connectivity Server’s team and market potential.

“We see huge opportunity for niche products, services, and applications in the telecommunications space and an agile development platform will dramatically reduce the time to market,” Mr Miller said.

“Connectivity Server changes the single channel paradigm of existing telecommunications services.  With Professor Coutts’ knowledge of the telecommunications industry and Justin Wearne’s background in marketing, we saw something that is often lacking in technology start-ups: industry knowledge and marketing capability.”

Connectivity Server combines software and hardware connected to telecommunications networks and the internet.

“Connectivity Server allows companies to quickly launch products and services that provide new functionality for telecommunications,” Mr Wearne said. “We will use the system to launch our first consumer product offering in March 2010. Meanwhile we are investment ready to meet our global marketing objectives.”
