The efforts of Australian authors Kate Shayler and Ally Mosher to bring their books to fruition paid off last Saturday night, 18 August, when they were both announced as the winners of their respective categories at the 2012 Global Ebook Awards in Santa Barbara, California.

Kate Shayler won the Biography Non Fiction prize for her current book Burnished: Burnside Life Stories. Burnished which recounts the stories of more than two dozen former residents of Burnside Children’s Homes in Sydney between the 1920s and 1970s.

Ally Mosher won the Teenage Literature Non Fiction prize with her first book The High School Survival Guide which operates as a vital resource for girls aged 11 to 14.

Naturally, both women are thrilled by their wins, but none more so than their publisher, Jenny Mosher, of MoshPit Publishing. “It just goes to show how strong the ebook market is becoming,” Mosher says. “While both books have also been released in print, it’s great to see the quality of the content being recognised in these awards.”

Acknowledging that it can be hard for indie authors and small publishers to get the word out, Mosher is very appreciative of the fact that ebooks and the digital age have allowed a small Australian publisher and its authors to win international awards. “I might be biased, Ally being my daughter, but it’s rewarding that my belief in these two books has been vindicated by an international literary audience.”

Both books are available in print and ebook formats from The MoshShop at and Burnished is also available in a variety of ebook formats from Smashwords at
