Malaga business UON Pty Ltd was announced the winner of the Telstra WA Business of the Year Award, as well as winner of the Commonwealth Bank Medium Business Award, 17 July in Perth.

Mark Keogh, UON Managing Director, said he was delighted to have won these awards and honoured to have his achievements recognised.

“My team and I have worked relentlessly to develop our specialised service offering. We have come a long way since I first began in 2002 with only three employees.

“I was driven to build my own equipment, after European-built load banks which test large electrical power systems and generators kept failing in the harsh Australian outback climate.

“We now offer solutions for the supply, management and control of site power, air and water, with a particular focus on the mining industry.

“The product range includes everything from load bank testing to power generation, pumping solutions, air compressors, energy and power management, switch boards and switch rooms."

Through Mark’s commitment and hands-on approach to tackling client projects, the company has expanded from three staff to 148 in the past six years.

“It’s very exciting times at the moment as we have several new projects and developments in the pipeline,” Mark said.

One such project is the joint initiative set up two months ago, Thirntu-UON JV, with respected Aboriginal community leader, Wayne Smith. Committed to making a positive difference to the Aboriginal communities in which they operate, Thirntu-UON JV is working to set up a range of training and employment opportunities for the Aboriginal people in regional WA.

Another exciting initiative UON is involved with is the Role Models and Leaders Australia project. As part of this project Mark has sponsored four young Aboriginal girls to learn to sail and race in this year’s UON SB20 World Championships being held off Hamilton Island in December.

Matt Comyn, Commonwealth Bank general manager of local business, said UON’s ability to innovate and meet changing demands was testament to the award.

“Small and medium businesses are fundamental to the overall strength of our economy and these awards reflect the diversity and breadth of entrepreneurial talent which exists in Australia,” he said.

Will Irving, Telstra Business Awards Ambassador, said the judges were particularly impressed with the management of the UON business that led to its growth and expansion.

“They described their site visit as exceptional,” he said.

The winners move on to the national Telstra Australian Business Awards to be announced on August 29 in Sydney.
