ONE of the world's most in-demand improvisers is coming to Perth on July 28.

Jill Bernard is joining Perth improvisational veteran Glenn Hall and his regular Just Improvise team for the Small Cute Show of Improv at the Hollywood Subiaco Bowling Club for one show only.

She was headline attraction at Improvention 2012 – the southern hemisphere’s largest festival of spontaneous theatre – in Canberra earlier this month with Hall performing alongside her for the opening night celebrity gala.

Bernard has won numerous improv awards, taught and performed in Norway, Canada and more than 30 US states, taken to the stage in more than 40 improv festivals with her one-woman show Drum Machine and is author of the Small Cute Book of Improv.

“What’s wonderful about being a travelling improviser is that anywhere you go in the world, you can meet other improvisers and we speak a common language – but it’s always a little different,” she said.

“You can always see influence of the city you’re in on the style of the improvisers and the preferences of the audiences, so I can’t wait to what Perth is like.”

The first half of the July 28 show will see improvisers play Jill Bernard's improv format I Jump You Jump where each cast member has a partner.

They can only be on stage when their partner is on stage so, if their partner leaves or comes back, they must also find a reason to join or leave the scene.

Popular Just Improvise team members Brianna Williams, George Gayler, Jessica Messenger, Tegan Mulvany, Braye Dial, Melanie Bennett, Esther Longhurst, Chris Bedding, Chris Ratcliffe, Chantelle Magnus, Lance Magnus and Neil Barnard have put themselves up for the challenge.

After the interval, Glenn Hall takes to the stage with Bernard as they play the entire second half by themselves.

Musical director and cellist Tristen Parr and percussionist Callum Moncrieff provide a live, improvised musical score for the evening.

"I had one of the most joyous improv experiences of my life performing in Jill's show at Improvention in Canberra and can't wait to share the magic of her with Perth improvisers and audiences," Hall said.

“She’s one of the world's most in-demand improvisers and improv trainers and we're super-lucky to have her coming to Perth.

“Jill's show is truly a one-off opportunity for Perth audiences to see an improviser of this calibre.”

Just Improvise is Hall’s specialist improvisation company offering improvised theatre productions and improvisation training while hosting interstate and international improvisers, such as Jill Bernard, for training and performance opportunities.

“Improv has spread all over the world because it’s an extremely portable and inexpensive art form,” Bernard said.

“With the capability of sharing ideas and videos over the internet, even more improv groups have sprung up in the past 15 years.

“Improv is about yourself and your partners and finding your inner courage. These are great lessons on stage but they’re even more useful offstage.

“I’m an improviser because the worlds we create are magical places to live for just a little while.”

Jill Bernard's Small Cute Show of Improv plays at 8pm, July 28. All tickets are $20 – book through BOCS on (08) 9484 1133 or
