The Travel Centre teams with the Norfolk Island Museum to invite you to a special maritime week ‘From the Sirius to the Bounty’ to be held on Norfolk Island and forming part of the 2013 First Fleet anniversary celebrations.

The Travel Centre invites visitors to share in celebrating Norfolk Island’s amazing and varied maritime stories. Norfolk became the only place in Australia that early Polynesian’s settled and much mystery around their time here remains. Captain Cook’s discovery of the island and recording of the endemic Norfolk Island pine became a key reason why the island was settled within months of the First Fleet’s arrival in 1788.

With the 1790 wrecking of the flagship of the First Fleet Norfolk became home to the Nation’s most important shipwreck site and material. Captain John Hunter’s conduct on that fateful day will be put under the microscope. What follows, but the dramatic story of the Mutiny on the Bounty! Hollywood fiction will be separated from fact in this most famous of mutinies. Norfolk’s whaling and lighterage stories provide fascinating glimpses into an island whose fate right up to today has been greatly impacted by the sea.

Being on Norfolk Island for this special Maritime week visitors will experience what it’s like to be amongst the evidence of such an intriguing mix of maritime stories. Options include walking the reef to find the Sirius causeway, visiting the HMS Sirius museum and seeing some of the over 6,000 recovered artefacts, walk the Norfolk Pine forests and chat with the local Bounty descendants.
