Australian ebook publisher MoshPit Publishing announced today that two of its authors, Kate Shayler and Ally Mosher, have had their ebooks listed as finalists in the 2012 Global Ebook Awards (

Burnished: Burnside Life Stories, by Kate Shayler, is a finalist in two categories: Biography (Non-Fiction) and History (Non-Fiction). Burnished recounts the stories of more than two dozen former residents of Burnside Children’s Homes in Sydney between the 1920s and 1970s. After the release of her first book, the confronting The Long Way Home (Random House), Kate was approached by many others who wanted help to tell their stories, too. While these people are from the Forgotten Australian generations, their stories are, generally, more uplifting and inspiring than sad.

The High School Survival Guide, by Ally Mosher, is one of only two finalists in the Teen Literature Non-Fiction category. The High School Survival Guide was based on popular blog posts made by the author during her high school years, and developed into a book for 11-14 year old girls in a truly international collaboration with New Zealand careers advisor Tracy Keith, international hip hop artist Ben ‘R-Tizt’ Francis from UK band Luminites, and Australian photographer and indie film maker Darren Phillips, from Darphi Images.

Says Jennifer Mosher, Managing Director of MoshPit Publishing, “This is a great day for Australian publishing and indie authors in particular. While print books are still important, ebooks are the way of the future. It’s great to see two Aussie authors making their mark on the global epublishing landscape.”

While both books have also been released in print editions, it’s the ebookversions which are helping them reach a wider audience. “The print versions are physically heavy, have been costly to produce, and cost even more to post. Being able to offer ebook versions has meant that we can reach a wider audience, more economically and with much less effect on the environment.”

Both books are available in print and ebook formats from and Burnished is also available in a variety of ebook formats from

The Global Ebook Awards will be held in Santa Barbara, California on 18 August and the authors and publisher will be hoping that at least one of the books comes away with a ‘Winner’ gong.
