Saying goodbye for the last time with a unique salute to Perth and its iconic river, the Swan, is now a reality for proud West Australians.

Following a successful real-time full service funeral rehearsal held yesterday, Seasons Funerals will now be taking bookings from families who wish to hold services on board the Crystal Swan as it cruises the Swan River.

Though the service and route can be crafted to suit each family, it is envisaged that a typical service would follow the format of that demonstrated yesterday: with a hearse loading the coffin and funeral arrangers at the Barrack Street Jetty, before picking up family and guests at the Mends Street Jetty, returning to Barrack Street whilst the service runs.

The occasion also marked the formal anointment of Erin Erceg as General Manager. Ms Erceg, 29, brings with her a young, fresh energy to the funeral industry.

“We don’t believe this (funerals on the Swan) has ever been done before,” says Ms Erceg.

Ms Erceg believes that in an era where people view death, and therefore funerals, more through the prism of a life celebration than an event of mourning, it makes sense to have a farewell in keeping with the unique spirit of the individual.

“I have often wondered if people have communicated their wishes for their farewell to their loved ones. Your final farewell should be the most articulate expression of your life you can imagine,” she said.

Seasons expect that many people in Perth who have lived their life based around the river and the WA outdoor life style will embrace this new service, which they believe will develop into an icon in its own right.

Seasons Funerals have always taken a sophisticated, individualised and out of the box approach to the celebration of life, and this event will also mark their intention to accelerate this approach and broaden such offerings to West Australian families.
