Recent figures from Life Saving Victoria (LSV) show that tragically drowning remains one of the most common causes of preventable death in Victorian children under fourteen, this is despite compulsory building regulations requiring child safety barriers in all backyard pools.

In response to the figures the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) has suggested it is time for Victoria to investigate additional safety protection measures.

Citing successful practices employed interstate, the MAV has suggested better safety education at pool and pool fence point-of-sale, along with compulsory compliance certificates when a property is sold or leased, as potential areas for safety improvement in Victoria.

Director Doug Graham, of glass balustrade specialists, Tough Glass Worx, supports the MAV’s call for better awareness on building safety regulations for Victorian pool and spa owners.

“As we’ve learned, preventable deaths in backyard pools and spas are tragically still occurring. There’s a clear opportunity for improvement by ensuring owners have a better understanding of their responsibilities. The first step is making sure any safety fence or gate installed is not only in good working order but compliant,” Mr Graham said.

Figures from the Building Commission of Victoria state that when compared to unfenced pools, fenced pools reduce the risk of drowning to about a quarter. However confusing building laws mean that many owners may be unaware that their pool or spa is inadequately fenced.

“With three separate sets of rules for pool fencing in Victoria, their application can naturally be confusing, which is why every pool owner should discuss their fencing requirements with a qualified builder or an experienced pool-fencing specialist,” said Mr Graham.

“At Tough Glass Worx our specialists work to ensure every safety requirement is adhered to and while of course a fence can never replace the vigilant eye of an adult, compliant pool fencing goes a long way in preventing these needless and tragic deaths,” he said.
