What: Australian Fashion Through the Decades A retrospective exhibition of Australian style from the 1920’s to the 1990’s.

Where: Australia On Collins, Level 5, 260 Collins Street Melbourne. When: Monday 18th June – Sunday 24th June 2012

Who: A collaboration between Australia On Collins and Circa Vintage Clothing

The world’s first glimpse of Australian fashion ingenuity began with Alexander McRae’s establishment of the Speedo brand in 1928, closely followed by R.M. Williams in the early 30’s. Prior to this, like most of the western world, Australian fashion took its lead from historical influence and the great fashion houses of Europe. It wasn’t until 1967 when Prue Acton presented her first show during New York Fashion Week that Australian designers gave the fashion world more to think about than the great outdoors.

To celebrate Australian designers and the styles we have made our own, Australia on Collins is collaborating with vintage clothing specialist Circa to show a retrospective of Australian style from the 1920’s to the 1990’s.

Collector, author and vintage clothing expert Nicole Jenkins has assembled the exhibition by selecting iconic styles from Australian fashion designers. ‘Vintage clothing is truly representative of how we’ve lived, loved and enjoyed life. This exhibition showcases evening wear created by Australian designers and provides a snapshot into our social lives at that time.’

The history of Australian style is rich and over the decades we have adapted the sophistication of European haute couture and married it with our own sense of style, creating an industry that is renowned internationally for exceptional talent, individuality and quality.

Fashion Through the Decades exhibition will run from 18th to 24th June at Australia On Collins; Level 5, 260 Collins St, Melbourne.
