As more and more organisations move towards the cloud for services such as email, collaboration and CRM, the role of the system administrator is becoming increasingly redundant. With a bleak future ahead, what new skill sets must system administrators gain in order to remain relevant to the organisation?

“The role of internal IT staff such as IT system administrators and IT managers changes at the rate of technology. Gone are the days when internal IT employees were able to survive in the organisation with purely technical skills. These days, with more cloud services and outsourcing options available, IT personnel are required to possess a broad range of skill sets,” commented Kareem Tawansi, CEO of software development provider, Solentive Software.

“The internal IT person must be part technologist, part legal specialist, part marketer and part business analyst. Organisations need someone who is able to provide technology in a way that suits the organisation’s needs. In order to do this, they need to be proactive in asking what the business wants, but also advise what is available and be able to manage third-party vendors to ensure that they are delivering what the business requires,” advised Kareem.

This means that IT employees need to be able to effectively communicate with non-technical members of the organisation to properly understand their needs and translate them to third-party vendors or find solutions that are or will be available in the market. Solutions or new emerging technology need to be communicated to internal stakeholders and benefits to the organisation explained without the use of technical jargon. This will help to remove any existing barriers between the IT department and internal stakeholders and ultimately, deliver business growth.
