Australia's current multi-speed economy combined with declining demand has had a big impact on the engine room of our economy, small business. So the welcome initiatives in the Budget aimed at assisting small business to weather the storm are supported by the ICT industry's peak industry body, the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA).

"Loss carry backs combined with better implementation of the Enterprise Connect program, which AIIA members are involved in, is very welcome news, said Chief Executive Officer of AIIA, Suzanne Campbell. "AIIA's membership includes a large percentage of small and medium businesses and it is gratifying to see this Government recognising the crucial input they have to this nation's productivity and growth.

"In addition, the appointment of a Small Business Commissioner to provide line of sight for small business when they liaise with government is a sound move; AIIA urges the government to consult widely with our small and medium members on this appointment."

"The Manufacturing Technology Innovation Centre similarly is a sound initiative; joining the dots between major manufacturers, small business, industry bodies and research communities will help small business benefit from the supply chains already out there in the smart manufacturing sector, where ICT plays the lead role", said Ms Campbell.

Ms Campbell noted that ongoing support of ICT small business will be crucial to leveraging the potential smart applications on the back of the NBN which in turn will drive Australia's lagging productivity upwards.
