Master Electricians Australia has today endorsed the decision by the Newman Government to dump the Climate Smart program, saying the scheme had been little more than a public relations exercise.

Master Electricians Australia’s CEO Malcolm Richards said the Climate Smart scheme had offered very little in the way of genuine reduction in energy use.

“This was a scheme that was cleverly designed to appeal to voters with gimmicks, such as energy meters and ‘smart’ power boards,” Mr Richards said.

“However, in terms of actual reductions in energy use, Master Electricians has long been of the view that this scheme was achieving very little for Queensland taxpayers.

“We had reports of electricians being on site for as little as 15 minutes to conduct the so-called energy audits, and many cases of homeowners who never received their promised energy use reports.

“It is hard to see this as anything but ‘once over lightly’.

“Homeowners who are genuinely interested in cutting their power bills should take expert advice on a range of options including behavioral improvements, tariff assessments, return on investment on upgrading to new energy efficient appliances and ultimately the suitability of power generation (solar panels).

“Achieving a genuine outcome can require some up-front expenditure, but it will generally pay for itself over time.

“The Climate Smart scheme was a poor substitute for genuine energy savings, and taxpayers are better off without it.”
