The Government releases for consultation draft regulations to support the Carbon Farming Initiative (the CFI).

The CFI is a voluntary offsets scheme which provides new economic opportunities for farmers, forest growers and landholders and helps the environment by reducing carbon pollution. The CFI commenced in December 2011.

Initial regulations to support the CFI came into force on 8 December 2011. The second tranche of regulations provides further detail on elements such as auditing, reporting and the issuance of credits.

Comments on the draft regulations will be taken into consideration when finalising the regulations. Public submissions are due by 26 April 2012.
