On Saturday 31st March, Ricoh will join hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments around the world in support of Earth Hour 2012 and switch off its Sydney sky sign.

The sign, the first-of-its-kind in Australia, is a 100 percent solar-powered eco billboard positioned in the North Sydney skyline overlooking the Warringah Freeway, the gateway to Sydney over the Harbour Bridge.

The eco billboard’s technology is driven by 96 solar panels that generate power that is stored onto 48 batteries onsite, and act as the only source of power for the sign. When the batteries run out of power, the Ricoh sign does not light, nor will it ever use any power from the grid.

While the eco billboard uses only renewable energy, Ricoh has chosen to switch it off for the duration of Earth Hour to show its support for the cause and further demonstrate its dedication to the environment.

According to Richardson, adopting a sustainable business model, such as Ricoh’s, not only reduces an organisation’s carbon emissions and environmental impact, but also improves a business’ bottom line by offering less cost, waste and complexity to their customers.

Earth Hour has grown from a one-city initiative in 2007, to a 5,251 city strong global movement, last year reaching 1.8 billion people in 135 countries across all seven continents. Earth Hour 2012 will take place in Australia at 8.30pm – 9.30pm on Saturday 31 March.

Earth Hour

Earth Hour is a global environmental initiative in partnership with WWF and Leo Burnett. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities are invited to turn out their lights for one hour on Saturday March 31, 2012 at 8:30 PM to show their support for environmentally sustainable action. In 2012, Earth Hour’s I Will If You Will concept invites individuals and organisations to challenge others to an ongoing environmental commitment beyond the hour. Earth Hour began in one city in 2007 and by 2011 reached over 1.8 billion people in 135 countries across every continent, receiving reports as ‘the World’s largest campaign for the planet’.
