Following on the success of last year's live author chat with New York Times bestseller Becca Fitzpatrick, author of the Hush, Hush saga,, an Australian-based online social book network for readers, announced its 2012 line-up of live online author chats, commencing on Valentine’s Day with Shelli Johannes-Wells author of thrilling mystery and romance page turner Untraceable, and following with best selling award winner Cath Crowley author of Graffiti Moon.

Shelli started out writing for her local school paper, winning a state essay contest on nutrition entitled “Be a Smart Cookie”. Along with singing in a local Jazz band, she earned an MBA and embarked on an 18-year marketing career in Corporate America before trading in her expensive suits, way-too high heels, and corporate lingo for a family, flip-flops, and her love of writing.

More and more authors are finding their audiences online as eBooks become an important component of a consumer’s library. And young adult audiences in particular are keen to engage not only with the author but with other readers of the same books. Being able to recommend books to your friends, share your comments and discover new books to read online is an important component of a person’s reading life and plays an important role as browsing in a bookstore or online.

“What this points to,” says Kim Anderson, CEO “is a new and important category for publishers to market and sell books. With author appearances in bookstores gradually disappearing, marketing books online is becoming increasingly important component of a winning plan and can help publishers find and engage with their audiences.

"There are some logistics which need to be taken into account including time-zones and rights for particular territories. manages these by ensuring our data is structured in a way that enables members to see a single page for a particular title with the relevant cover and ISBN records displayed for their market. It’s been a long process to get the database structured in this and it is an ongoing process but it is important to address both the publishers and consumer’s needs. Our members have also been a great help in identifying books that need to be added to the 6 million + records.

Navigating around time zones can also be challenging. Ensuring that when time-zones clash, members can post questions in advance and read the transcript later is a critical part of the event. Some of our members join live regardless of time but we try to make sure our line-up caters for markets in a range of countries.

To ensure authors are not overwhelmed and to keep things orderly, chats are conducted by a moderator who passes questions from the chat room to the author. This enables a much better flow and negates duplicate questions, just as you would have someone do this in a live author signing.
