Take 14 rubbish trucks filled with soiled, disposable nappies, and send them to our landfill. That is what
happens every year in just one council area in Adelaide, according to Grace Barila of Eco Bums Cloth Nappy
Library in Adelaide.

“This ‘convoy of poo’ is not just shameful as it parades through our streets, it then sits and stains our
environment for generations to come, “ says Ms Barila.

“In fact, every disposable nappy ever made is still lying in landfill in Adelaide and around the world, with
another 2.1 billion disposable nappies added to Australia’s landfill each year,” she says.

“The sad thing is that many Adelaide parents contribute to the Convoy of Poo because they are not aware of
the latest advances in Reusable Nappy technology, known as MCNs or Modern Cloth Nappies.”

Eco Bums has been working with local councils, such as Port Adelaide Enfield, and leading waste educator
KESAB Environmental Solutions to make it easy and affordable for parents to trial cloth nappies and learn
how to reuse them. The Eco Bums website also has a range of accessories for making it easier for parents to
integrate reusable nappies into busy and active routines.

“It is easier to use modern cloth nappies than people might think, with biodegradeable liners and wet bags,
modern nappies are a far cry from the heavy cloth nappies of yesteryear,” claims Ms Barila.

“And for eco-aware parents wanting to enjoy the many green events held in Adelaide during summer, like
Womadelaide, it is important to know that modern cloth nappies can easily be part of the day.

“Cloth nappies have come a long way since terry towelling squares - modern versions are much more
absorbent, less bulky, easier to wash and are just as easy to use as disposables, while looking great!

Grace Barila says parents wanting to stop the ‘convoy of poo’ can start by hiring a trial pack of reusable
nappies and accessories through the Eco Bums website. Some local councils also subsidise the hire.

Eco Bums Cloth Nappy Library Adelaide

Eco Bums The Cloth Nappy Library is a small business run by two mums in Adelaide, Grace Barila and Kelly Sergi. It sells and hires Modern Cloth Nappies (MCNs) and accessories.

Eco Bums came about due to the frustration of too much choice when it came to choosing types and brands of modern cloth nappies on the market.

Eco Bums has selected four brands of MCNs, after intensive trials in the field, so to speak.

Eco Bums' main focus is to encourage as many families as possible to help improve our environment by making the switch to MCNs!

Kelly: My initial motivation for using cloth was to save money. Many people thought I was crazy replacing the convenience of disposables with cloth nappies but I was determined because I knew in the long run how much I would be saving. I hope through Eco Bums I can help dispel the myths about cloth nappies and help promote all the positive benefits to be had by using them.

Grace: I was prepared to use cloth nappies right from the start. As much as I received encouragement, I also received negative comments such as, ‘it won’t last’, and ‘you use too much water with cloth nappies”. These comments came about by people not understanding how easy it is to use MCN’s and the benefits to the environment. I have a degree in Environmental Management. The environment is my passion in my work and in my life. I want to make sure I give my daughter the best start in life and to instill this passion in her. We don’t have to be a ‘throwaway nation’; we can make choices with the items we purchase.
