PLAYLOVERS is bringing the acclaimed novel and film, The Talented Mr Ripley, to life on stage this September.

Best known for the 1999 film version with Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law, the Patricia Highsmith novel was originally published in 1955, scoring the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America.

Directed by renowned Perth director John Milson and adapted for stage by Phyllis Nagy, The Talented Mr Ripley is a dark and sinister psychological thriller that follows charming conman Tom Ripley as he struggles to make a living in New York City.

Aspiring for wealth and social status, despite no prospects, Ripley does anything possible to achieve his goals without revealing his true identity.

“Nagy’s play is quite unlike the film version,” Milson said. “It is very non-naturalistic, quite abstract and much more dream-like and other-worldly.

“The Talented Mr Ripley is much more than just the story of an anti-hero who murders and steals a friend’s identity – it’s all about guilt and its effects.

“I have found the whole experience a fascinating project, thanks to an extremely dedicated cast.”

Izaak Lim (*this spelling is correct) plays Mr Ripley and describes him as both charming and deadly.

“I like Ripley’s sheer audacity, supreme confidence and razor sharp wit,” he said. “It’s a beautifully-written play that is intelligent and suspenseful.

“John Milson’s design concept and attention to detail makes this show highly exciting to work on.”

The Talented Mr Ripley plays at 8pm, September 24, 25, 26, 30, October 1, 2 and 3 with a 7pm show on September 27 at Hackett Hall, Draper Street (off Underwood Avenue), Floreat.

Tickets are $17, $15 concession – book through BOCS on 9484 1133 or Playlovers on 0415 777 173 or [email protected]
